ZANU PF AND MOYO DANGEROUS TO CIVIL LIBERTIES

By Matthew Nyashanu

ZANU PF and Jonathan Moyo are a complete danger to democracy and civil liberties of the Zimbabwean people. It is sad to see Jonathan Moyo coming back to ZANU PF in a bid to rekindle the diabolic relationship that saw the destruction of pure journalism in Zimbabwe.

One will wonder what happened to the original Professor Jonathan Moyo of the 80s and early 90s whose writings championed good governance and tolerance in communities.

Moyo's sudden turn to lead spinning on behalf of President Robert Mugabe s’ criminal cabal in the new millennium proved a thorny issue in the Zimbabwean road to democracy.

Many commentators believe that following allegations of massive financial scandals at FORD Foundation in Kenya and Witwatersrand university in South Africa Moyo sought the protection of the underworld masters which he found in the form of ZANU PF.

Since then, Moyo who is well known for running away from a training camp in Tanzania during the liberation struggle has become a gallant fighter with no tainted history of cowardice.

Meanwhile on the other side ZANU PF has clearly shown that it is determined to tear apart the inclusive government as long as the MDC is included. A recent interview on SW Radio Africa featuring Didymus Mutasa a long time ZANU PF geriatric revealed that this far right party has no commitment to resolve the pending political impasse.

Mutasa showed that he is totally ignorant about the terms and conditions of the Governemtn of National Unity. He still believes that Robert Mugabe has unquestionable powers with his reference to  Gideon Gono, Reserver Bank Governor and Johannes Tomana, the Attorney General whose appointments has become a strong subject of discussion in the GNU.

Jonathan Moyo even went further and showed his true right wing character by declaring that Roy Bennett, MDC Treasurer Gneral and his appointment to the position of Deputy Agriculture Minister should not be entertained because he served in the Rhodesian Army. Surely if such rights and bigotted beliefs are not challenged our liberties will remain in the custody of vultures.

Today millions of Zimbabweans are bearing the heat of the past ZANU PF fascist regime that saw thousands of people falling victim to a government purporting to be a liberator. The laws that were applied came from none other than Jonathan Moyo who is today masquerading as a victim of the Rhodesian front. Doreen Murungu, an MDC activist said that the past seven months of the inclusive government has been characterised by breaches and insincerity on the part of ZANU PF. She added that although the MDC has remained resilient and committed ZANU PF is clearly pushing out the MDC from the arrangement.

The only way to save the present arrangement in Zimbabwe is for SADCC to move swiftly away from the politics of patronage where past glory is used as licence to trample on the people s’ liberties to a new political dispensation that should tackle dictators head on.
